Orientation for Patients

Realize you are not alone. During 2006, an estimated 234,460 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States. Much support is available.

You have reason to be optimistic. About 1 man in every 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, but only 1 man in 30 will die of the disease. With over 1.8 million prostate cancer survivors in the United States, your chances of not dying from prostate cancer are excellent.

Realize you are going to die. It's a fact. You are mortal. This was the case long before you were diagnosed. Understanding this basic truth is key to making a rational decision about what to do.

Educate yourself. Learn about prostate cancer by reading an article from the Harvard Men’s Health Watch, reviewing valuable advice from Dr. William Lynes, subscribing to the Prostate Problems Mailing List (PPML), and checking out the PPML Archives.

Develop your cancer care team. Visit the American Urological Association to locate a local Board Certified Urologist.
